An MMC Partner was awarded $50,000 in August 2006 from The Center for Community PartnershipsThe Art | Sci Center, directed by Victoria Vesna and housed within the Department of Media Arts | Design in the UCLA School of Art and Architecture was recently awarded $50,000 in August 2006 by the Center for Community Partnerships in the UCLA Chancellor’s Office. These funds will be used over two years to partner with local community members and the Media and Medicine Center for Communities to improve the quality of public education materials for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder especially for the predominantly African American survivors of Hurricane Katrina as well as for future disaster situations.
MMC Partner Film receives Media Award from the Southern California Psychiatric Society. On May 1, 2005, the documentary film People Say I'm Crazy was honored with a Media Award by the Southern California Psychiatric Society. The film also has won awards from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (Outstanding Media Award, 2004) and numerous film festivals.
MMC Partner Organization Events at Pan African Film & Arts Festival, Los Angeles, February 10-25, 2005. Witness for Wellness and Healthy African American Families will be presenting four events at the Pan African Film & Arts Festival as part of the media and evaluation project entitled, "The secret that kills...art that heals."
MMC Partner one of People Magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" in 2004. UCLA psychiatrist and professional actor, Dr. Arif "Reef" Karim, was selected as one of People Magazine's "Sexiest Men Alive" for 2004. Dr. Karim specializes in addiction and relationship therapy, and is currently involved in research concerning the effects of the media's anti-drug messages on college-aged young adults.
MMC Partners' Film to Open in Los Angeles. People Say I'm Crazy, a full-length documentary co-produced by MMC partners Katie Cadigan and Ira Wohl, opens in Los Angeles on October 22, 2004 at the Laemmle Music Hall in Beverly Hills. The film, the first of its kind, was filmed and co-directed (along with Katie) by Katie's brother John Cadigan, and follows John's decade-long struggle with schizophrenia.
MMC Partner wins MacArthur Fellowship. On September 28, 2004, the MacArthur Foundation announced its 2004 MacArthur fellows. Among the 23 Fellows "selected for their originality, creativity, and the potential to do more in the future" was MMC's very own Gretchen Berland!
