Deborah Butterfield is an artist who began making horse scultpures 30 years ago as self-portraits expressing feminist and anti-war concerns. Encouraged by mentor Manual Neri, she's pursued the motif. Over time, gender and politics have mattered less, trumped by her passion for the horse itself. Ms. Butterfield has had numerous individual exhibitions at galleries and museums throughout the United States. In addition, she has selected collections located at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and many other sites. Ms Butterfield received her MFA for the University of California, Davis in 1975.
