Dr. Sturm is a Senior Economist at RAND. Dr. Sturm is Co-Principal Investigator of Healthcare for Communities, a national study of alcohol, drug abuse, and mental health care funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Principal Investigator of several NIH grants to study the economic implications of the changing health care system. Dr. Sturm's recent research has focused on the effects of health habits on health care costs; the changes of mental health and substance abuse services under managed care; and the effects of the parity legislation for behavioral health care. His research on risk contracts in managed care won the National Institute of Health Care Management's 2001 Annual Award for excellence in health services research. He has testified on mental health legislation in the US Congress, Nevada, Illinois, and California. Dr. Sturm received his Ph.D. in Economics at Stanford University.
