Katherine Watkins, M.D., M.S.H.S.
Dr. Watkins is a research psychiatrist at RAND and a former Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at UCLA. As a medical student, Dr. Watkins received a National Institute or Mental Health (NIMH) Behavioral Science Training Grant and conducted research on drug abuse and risk for HIV; as a resident in psychiatry she studied gender differences in treatment access for individuals with substance abuse and mental illness. She received her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and her M.S.H.S. from UCLA.
As a Clinical Scholar, Dr. Watkins analyzed the impact on health outcomes of terminating Supplemental Security Income to individuals disabled by substance abuse and is currently a Principal Investigator of a multi-site study tracking clinical and social outcomes. She is also the Principal Investigator of a project funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to develop and evaluate an intervention to improve the quality of mental health care delivered by outpatient substance abuse treatment providers. She is particularly interested in increasing access to treatment for vulnerable populations, and in improving care for individuals with co-occurring mental disorders and substance abuse. |
