Key aims: Evaluate the need for evidence based mental health care among middle school children in special education and the ability of schools to meet this need.
Methods: We will be conducting interviews with children in special education within the Los Angeles Unified School District, their parents and their mental health providers.
Significance and Impact: Although there is a growing emphasis on evidence-based treatments (treatments that are standardized, often with clear protocols, that have proven efficacy) in mental health care, it is unclear how community organizations such as schools and community mental health centers can use this information in practice and how relevant and adaptable these interventions are to these settings. By examining factors (organizational characteristics, provider training, and stakeholder attitudes) that influence service delivery in schools and developing a better understanding of how evidence-based treatments can be delivered in the school system, we hope to gather information that can be used to improve mental health care for children in special education. If well treated, children may function better in school and at home.
Current status: Study is in progress.
